LAS VEGAS -- The Rat Pack was reunited today in Las Vegas, as local officials unveiled a street sign dedicated to Sammy Davis Jr. that intersects with Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin Drives.
The Davis family joined Clark County Commissioner Chris Giunchigliani, whose district the street is located, other County commissioners and Josh Elliott, who advocated for the change. There ceremony was held Tuesday, Sept. 29, at the intersection of Sammy Davis Jr., Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin drives.
“Sammy Davis Jr. and the rest of the Rat Pack put Las Vegas on the map,” said Giunchigliani. “Now we are literally putting Sammy on the map and reuniting him with the rest of the Rat Pack for the first time in decades. This is great for Las Vegas, great for Sammy and his children, and great for the businesses along this corridor.”
South of the new Sammy Davis Jr. Drive is Dean Martin Drive, a stretch of Industrial Road which was renamed in 2005. The ribbon was cut on the final piece of Frank Sinatra Drive in 2004, which begins south of Russell Road and ends at Sammy Davis Jr. Drive and Dean Martin Drive.
“We can’t do enough to recognize what ‘Mr. Show Business’ has done for Las Vegas,” said Commissioner Lawrence Weekly. “He began performing for audiences at the age of 3 and excelled for many years as a singer, a musician, an actor and an advocate for civil rights. In fact, he was a large financial supporter of the civil rights movement. Today is a momentous occasion and I look forward to further development of this intersection where we reunite the Rat Pack.”
